Curious Cooks

Curious Cooks is one of Summit Community Gardens - EATS (SCG-EATS) after-school programs in partnership with Park City School District (PCSD). SCG - EATS cooks with the elementary students every Friday. It’s held on early-out Fridays and rotates through each of the District’s four elementary schools. Classes focus on the food cycle, the basics of cooking, and the best part - taste tests! Our interactive cooking classes get students excited about food and nutrition and expands their palates. With repeated hands-on exposure to food prep and cooking, students leave class with a basic knowledge of food preparation and how best to fuel their bodies. As part of our edible education, Curious Cooks reaches 500 children who participate in PCSD after-school programs, half of whom qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. Eat the Rainbow

Eat the Rainbow is a cooking class for our youngest culinary adventurers. We partner with Holy Cross Ministries and PC Tots to bring these interactive lessons to preschool children. Each week they learn about food from seed to soil, from planting seeds to eating delicious, nourishing foods to exploring compost! Our education team leads a 30-minute lesson each month for each class, incorporating a seasonal recipe that provides one - three servings of fruits or vegetables. The colors of the rainbow represent healthy fruits and vegetables little ones taste and prepare. Additional hands-on, fun activities reinforce the educational messages in each lesson. Research shows that young people who garden and/or cook are more likely to have healthy relationships with food and build lifelong healthy eating habits. That’s why we encourage little hands digging in the dirt, using kitchen tools, trying and tasting the food they prepare. Building in opportunities for little ones to try new foods is a hallmark of all of our programs. Email our education team at education@summitcommunitygardens.org to learn more about Eat the Rainbow.
