Summer Garden Educator

Summit Community Gardens - EATS (SCG-EATS) seeks a part-time educator to assist with our fun seed-to-soil Garden Camp!  The Summer Garden Educator reports  to the Education Manager. The ideal candidate will have experience leading outdoor programs with elementary school-aged children, love cooking and gardening, and be comfortable outdoors in all weather. Great judgment and communication skills are key.  Garden camp runs for 9 weeks, June to August. This is an on-site position at the Garden, 4056 Shadow Mountain Drive, off Old Ranch Road in Park City, with some off-site field trips.

Who we are

Summit Community Gardens - EATS (SCG-E) is a non-profit organization located in Park City, UT with a mission to gather, learn, and grow in our Garden, schools and community. We believe that everyone should have access to healthy food,  and that children who cook, garden, and connect to where food comes from are more likely to have lifelong healthy eating habits. We are working towards an inclusive community focused on learning, connection, wellness, and stewardship.

What We Do

During the school year, we lead school-based gardening, cooking and nutrition programs for preschool through 8th graders. During the summer, we steward a 1.5-acre Community Garden with 134 plots for community members and a large demonstration garden where we grow food for community members experiencing food insecurity. Each summer the Garden is also the site of our summer camp, community education programs, and dinners with local chefs. 

What You Will Do

  • Help lead outdoor summer camp activities on gardening, environmental stewardship, safe food preparation & cooking, and camaraderie. 

  • Get camp activities ready at the start of day and clean-up at the end of the day

  • Supervise small group activities

  • Assist with behavior guidance

  • Be familiar with restorative behavioral management practices 

  • Assist with shopping and administrative tasks around summer camp programming.

  • Other tasks as needed

To be successful, you have:

  • Experience working with children in an educational, enrichment, and/or outdoor  setting

  • Comfort with cooking and food preparation

  • Basic knowledge of sustainable, organic gardening OR strong desire to learn

  • Basic knowledge of naturalist and conservation principles OR strong desire to learn

  • Organized, motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a team

  • Desire to work outdoors in variable weather conditions

  • Excellent communication skills, positive attitude, and ability to solve problems creatively

  • The ability to find points of connection with different people, a positive attitude, and asset-based mindset. 

  • U.S. Citizenship or be eligible to work in the U.S. 

  • Pass a National Background check (SCG - EATS will fund this process)

  • CPR/First Aid Certified or be willing to get certified (SCG - EATS will fund this process)

A Big Plus If You

  • Speak Spanish

  • Have experience with non-profits and/or volunteers

  • This is a part-time, hourly position, 20-25 hours/week, within the 8:30 - 1pm or 8:30- 3:30 pm camp timeframe 

  • Camp runs 9 weeks June 8th to August 7th. Approximately 20-22 children attend each week, with 3 staff leading programming. 

  • The start date for this position is June 1 and end is August 14th, with some flexibility. 

  • Pay is $19-$20/hr, depending on experience, with a $300 end of season bonus

  • The ability to lift 25 pounds is required. 

  • Access to garden produce and a fun, always changing work environment
