Program Educator

Summit Community Gardens - EATS (SCG-EATS) seeks an educator to lead our seed-to-soil educational programs with youth. Our programs blend hands-on gardening, cooking, nutrition and sustainability for Pre-K to 9th graders in local schools. The ideal candidate will have experience leading indoor and outdoor programs with children, developing curriculum, creating recipes, and gardening. Great communication skills are key. Assisting with building partnerships, working with volunteers, and program coordination rounds out this role. This role plays a key part in realizing the SCG -EATS’ vision of creating healthier outcomes for local children and inspiring the next generation of healthy eaters. 

Who We Are

SCG-EATS is a non-profit organization located in Park City, UT with a mission to gather, learn, grow and build community through food. We believe that everyone should have access to healthy food and that connecting children to where food comes from through cooking and gardening means they are more likely to have lifelong healthy eating habits.

What We Do

We operate Summit County’s only public community garden and engage in school and community-based seed-to-plate-to-soil education programs. During the school year, we lead school-based programs for 1800 children in Summit and Wasatch counties. Our Garden consists of 134 community plots and a large demonstration garden where we grow food for community members experiencing food insecurity. Our Garden is also the site of summer camp, after school programs, and dinners with local chefs.


What You Will Do

Implement education programs

  • Lead or assist with SCG-EATS cooking and gardening classes in school classrooms, including in-school and after school

  • Lead or assist with SCG - EATS cooking and gardening classes- onsite at our garden, including summer camps

  • Act as an on-site supervisor for summer camp 

  • Lead or assist with the coordination and implementation of cooking and gardening programming with partner organizations 

  • Be familiar with restorative behavioral management practices 

  • Prepare for classes (i.e. grocery shopping and taking inventory)

  • Work with the team to develop new programs with community partners to share cooking, nutrition and gardening knowledge and build confidence and connection 

  • Assist in managing volunteers in schools and garden 

  • Work with the team on identifying opportunities for volunteers

Curriculum development and evaluation

  • Track evaluation metrics and attendance for all classes

  • Distribute surveys and input data

  • Develop recipes and curriculum collaboratively for all education classes

Operational support

  • Coordinate community education events with a family focus, including promotion, outreach to partners, work with volunteers, and serving as on-site lead 

  • Understand all platforms used to run the education programs and assist in processes as needed, including Squarespace, SmartWaiver, Canva, Google Suite

  • Other tasks as needed

To Be Successful, You Have

  • Experience working with children in an educational, enrichment, and/or outdoor  setting

  • Comfort with cooking, food preparation, and gardening

  • Strong organizational skills and reliability

  • Ability to create an encouraging and fun environment for students

  • Experience in nutrition, food system or hands-on learning a plus

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Ability to  build strong, collaborative relationships with members of our team

  • A proven track record of working independently. 

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check 

  • A valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and reliable car. Personal vehicles will be used for transportation to and from schools in Summit and Wasatch counties. Mileage will be reimbursed according to IRS guidelines.

  • A current food handler’s permit, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.

  • A current CPR/First Aid permit, or ability to obtain one 

  • The ability to find points of connection with diverse groups of people,  a positive attitude, and asset-based mindset. 

  • A recognition of the ways that race and other identities impact the communities we serve and can identify when there is a decision, policy, or practice that may have disparate impacts

A Big Plus If You

  • Speak Spanish

  • Have experience with non-profits and/or volunteers

  • Shop for ingredients for this week’s elementary classes

  • Develop a pesto recipe for our middle school class next week

  • Collaborate on summer camp planning, including creating our registration and scholarships process

  • Organize supplies in our storage unit to make production go smoothly for classes

  • This is a 20-hour/week, salaried, hybrid, year-round position which requires time in-person, on-site in the Garden and at locations around Park City. 

  • A car and driver’s license are required

  • The ability to lift 40 pounds is required. 

  • Salary range $20-21,000 for 20 hours/week depending on experience plus a health & wellness stipend

  • 2 weeks paid time off after 3 months
