Experience a cultural immersion into the Zoque-Maya chocolate-making tradition! Participants will learn the origin and cultural significance of chocolate, use traditional tools to grind cacao beans from farms in Chiapas into chocolate using hands-on processes, and taste traditional chocolate beverages, chocolates, and other recipes. This workshop offers space to reflect on the profound depth of ancestral knowledge and earth-sustaining practices, while examining the vibrant parallels within Utah's diverse communities, where generational wisdom is honored preserving ancestral recipes and traditional food preparation methods.
Class includes all materials and ingredients. Ages 12 and up.

Learn how to make a super nutrient-rich extract from your compost to nourish the soil and therefore your plants! Applying compost tea and other organic fertilizers can help increase soil microbiology and mycorrhizal networks, help roots maximize their uptake of nutrients, and grow better, bigger, and tastier vegetables.

Offered during our Arts & Culture camp, and open to other community members, this gathering focuses on the importance of connecting with food, where it comes from, and how we honor the land and the food it produces. There will also be time to share stories and connections with La Milpa. This gathering is in English with Spanish translation. We acknowledge ancestral and current Indigenous practices as we give gratitude to the land. A sample of delicious, traditional food will be offered. Registration is required for this free event.

Join local artist Bridgette Meinhold for an evening of watercolor painting at the Community Gardens. We will learn how to take our time in nature, use our observational skills, and turn those impressions into art. This class takes advantage of the beautiful Community Garden at peak season, with the surrounding mountains as our inspiration. We will explore how to transform what we see in nature into a memorable painting, plus go over supplies and basic watercolor skills. This class is open to all skill levels. All are welcome!

We'll practice yoga poses for all bodies and learn fun mindfulness techniques. Storytelling and coloring too! All ages, sizes and experience levels are welcome (babies to grandparents). Please bring your own mat. This class is offered free or with an optional donation, but registration is required.

It is time to harvest! Together, we will gather as a community to harvest La Milpa and other culturally-relevant crops. We acknowledge ancestral and current Indigenous practices fas we recognize all that the land has provided. We hope for a bountiful harvest that allows people to bring some of the harvest home. Join us at the Garden for an in-person class! This class will go over pest and disease identification and cover how to deal with those pests - including bugs and rodents - and the common diseases that affect our garden plants, using organic methods and incorporating Integrated Pest Management.

Preparing Your Garden - In Person Class

Join us in the Garden as we share best practices on how to prepare garden plots. Weβll learn about soil amendments, like compost and other organic materials, that can enhance soil fertility. Techniques using broadforks and other tools to loosen soil and prepare it for planting (especially important for our rocky soil) will be demonstrated and everyone will get a chance to try out the tools. Weβll also review some earlier topics, including planting dates, seed sowing & transplanting tips, frost protection, and irrigation best practices.

Join us to learn all about starting seeds indoors to transplant in your garden once it warms up and the danger of frost is behind us. We will go over how to pick out or create a potting mix, how to plant different types of seeds, water needs, and more.
*Materials will be provided. We will have some seeds to share and feel free to bring your seeds!

This class will help folks understand the terminology around seed buying, including what organic, non-GMO, hybrid, locally adapted, and more mean. Weβll talk about companion planting, crop rotation, seed starting dates, planting quantities, and more as we work to build planting plans and charts for the coming season. I will also recommend seed companies and seed varieties best suited to our high altitude growing environment.

This class is intended for those who have taken the Intro to High Altitude Gardening course or who have gardened in a high altitude setting for a season or longer. There will be a brief review of the basics, followed by more specific information about plant varieties, planting dates and techniques, irrigation needs, soil health principles, and more. Attendees are encouraged to bring their specific gardening questions here for a Q&A session at the end of the class.
